Calprotectin Lateral Flow Test
Calprotectin is a complex of the mammalian proteins and it is the only known antimicrobial manganese sequestration protein complex. Calprotectin comprises as much as 60% of the soluble protein content of neutrophil cytosol. Calprotectin becomes available in the intestinal lumen via leukocyte shedding, active secretion, cell disturbance, and cell death. This results in elevated faecal calprotectin levels. As such, Calprotectin is useful as a marker, as it is resistant to enzymatic degradation, and can be easily measured in feces.
Procalcitonin (PCT)
Procalcitonin is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin. PCT level rises in a response to bacterial infection. It does not rise significantly with viral or non-infectious inflammations. Measurement of procalcitonin can be used as a marker of severe sepsis caused by bacteria and generally grades well with the degree of sepsis. Furthermore, PCT levels are usually monitored during the antibiotic treatment. Evidence is emerging that procalcitonin levels can reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing to people with non-bacterial infections.
